‘Fayek Alaya’, written by the Rahbani Brothers, turns up in a place its authors could not have anticipated.

One of the most original and trailblazing artists of the 21st century, rapper and producer Kanye West (also known as Ye, born Kanye Omari West), samples the classical song ‘Fayek Alaya’ translated as “Do You Remember Me?” performed by Fairuz and written and composed by the Rahbani Brothers in 1963.

The original song carries a gentle sense of longing, recalling innocent love in the Lebanese countryside. It centers on small, spontaneous moments, like gifting a flower or playing beneath arches, capturing the warmth and nostalgia of first love.

Kanye samples the chorus of ‘Fayek Alaya’ in his track ‘All the Love’ from his album ‘Bully’ a collaboration with André Troutman. Troutman uses a talkbox to layer over Fairuz’s Arabic vocal phrases, transforming the original into an interwoven vocal interplay.

By blending Fairuz’s voice with the synthesized hum of the talkbox, Ye creates a slippery effect. Meanwhile the production echoes the moody atmosphere of Yeezus and the melancholic, synth-heavy style of 808s & Heartbreak.

Kanye flips the emotional context of the sample, turning a tender memory into a modern heartbreak anthem. In earlier versions, he replaced the lyric “All the love” with “All the lies,” singing, “I hope you get all the lies, and all the shine.” Here the innocence of the original is stripped away and replaced with a more cynical reflection on betrayal, broken relationships, and fame.
