How ‘Satalana’ went from one film scene to the whole Arab world

It started in Ba’d El Sher, moved to Egyptian TikTok, and kept going. The route is now the standard one.

Originally performed by Abdelbasset Hamouda and Mahmoud Ellithy, the hit song ‘Satalana’ was first introduced in the Egyptian film Ba’d El Sher starring Ali Rabie. The track quickly gained massive street-level popularity and went viral across Egyptian Tik-Tok and later the wider Arab world.

The word “Satalana” is derived from the Arabic slang word “mastool”, which describes someone who is so intoxicated that they become largely unaware of their surroundings. The original song blends Egyptian shaabi with contemporary pop-folk influences, touching on themes of personal feelings, intoxication desires, and food cravings through its playful and humorous lyrics.

Pitbull and Lil Jon’s twist takes the track in a different direction, infusing it with a Latin dance-pop and electro-house energy while retaining the original recognizable “Satalana” chorus. The new verses shift the focus toward flirtation, nightlife, and party-centric themes, transforming the song into a club-ready hit.
